Tableau, I love you, but you’re bringing me down

Not too long ago, we (the Datagami contributors) had a call, and the topic of data viz tools came up. Those of us using them love Tableau but were all moving away from it, mainly due to the heavy-handed pricing structure. (Microsoft Power BI has this beat, and my company’s moving to a new ERP with data viz (Birst) built in.) As we talked, I could hear Kermit in the back of my head pensively starting to sing LCD Soundsystem’s love letter to New York, but now with slightly different words:

Tableau, I love you, but you’re bringing me down.
Tableau, I love you, but you’re bringing me down.
Non-existent support, oh where do I start?
Tableau, I love you, But you’re bringing me down.

Tableau, you’re pretty, and you’re wasting my time.
Can’t model a thing – our data’s filthy but fine.
Once the sale was done, our account manager’s run
and left us all hanging with nothing but time.

Tableau, you’re perfect, oh please don’t change a thing.
Salesforce bought you up – are you disappearing?
Now we’ve moved our BI to a new tool in the sky
But I miss all your forums and collaborating.

Tableau, I love you, but you’re wearing me out.
There’s a ton of the twist, but you’re fresh out of shout.
Like an extract that’s run, our relationship’s done.
Tableau, I love you, but I’m tearing my hair.

Tableau, I love you, but support’s just not there.
Tableau, I love you, but support’s just not there.
Like a death of the heart, Jesus, where do I start?
But you’re still the one pool where I’d happily drown.

And oh.. take me off your mailing list
For conferences that still exist
And for forums I will have missed.
Maybe I’m wrong, and maybe you’re right.
Maybe I’m wrong, and maybe you’re right.
Maybe you’re right, maybe I’m wrong.
And just maybe you’re right.

And oh! My CIO is through with you.
But I still use Tableau Public, true. And I can’t leave you alone.
But maybe he’s wrong and maybe I’m right, And just maybe he’s wrong.
Maybe he’s wrong, and maybe I’m right, And if so, here’s this song.
